10-year-old found safe

By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

A 10-year-old autistic child was found safe Friday afternoon, and the child’s parents received misdemeanor citations as a result.

Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said the child was found in underclothes wandering in a culvert on KY 92 across the highway from his parents’ residence, which is located on Highway 2792 East.

The grandmother of the child made the discovery.

The 32-year-old father told deputies “he had been up all night playing video games,” according to lead investigator Deputy Jeff Anderson.

The father told Anderson that at 10:30 a.m. Friday morning, he awoke and checked on the child, whom he said was there, according to Anderson.

The father “laid back down” and continued sleeping.

The child’s mother said “she was awakened by her husband saying ‘the door’s open and (the child’s) gone,’” Anderson said, adding that he was told that happened approximately 12:30 p.m.

Harrell said that Whitley dispatchers were not contacted by the parents until 2 p.m.

Several agencies assisted in the search, including the Williamsburg Police Department, the Williamsburg Fire Department, and Kentucky State Police Trooper Stacy Walker. Whitley County EMS checked the child after the child was found.
