Corbin High School’s Site-Based Decision Making council and School Superintendent Ed McNeel met at the Corbin Center for Technology Friday to begin formulating the interview questions being prepared in order to hire a new high school principal.

McNeel chairs that group.

The first task of the six-member group was to review interview questions which had been submitted. The council received more than 300 submissions.

The goal is to get a list of questions prepared so that those interviewed for the principal position will have an equal chance at landing the job.

They also discussed allocating a specific length for each interview.

Several types of questions were discussed, although none of the specific questions were read out loud during that meeting.

One subject concerned questioning interviewees about teacher-principal relations. “(Take) the weakest link in the building — if they are not confronted, then that’s the level of performance that’s accepted,” McNeel said, adding the school currently has plenty of great teachers.

Several other topics were discussed — and after an hour-long session, council members voted on the questions.

Member Debbie Theodore motioned to approve the list once it’s edited for clarity and grammar, with a second from member Creston Waddle. A voice-vote showed the council to be unanimous with this decision.

The next step for the council was to review the screening process.

“We need to take the applications of all the candidates and go through the screening process,” McNeel told council members.

Currently there are 18 applicants for the principal’s position. “We’ll follow up on the ones chosen from (that) 18,” McNeel said, adding that included checking references. “It’s a stair-stepping process.”

Council members agreed the next meeting date to continue the selection process is slated for 3:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Corbin Center.

Council members then went into executive session to specifically review the candidate applications. McNeel said no decision was made during this session.

Members of this council include McNeel, Waddle, Theodore, Jody Mouser, Tammy Gilbert and Brent West.
