Two bands announced for NIBROC

Borrowed Blue, Caught Red Handed to perform

CORBIN — Two of the bands set to perform at this year’s NIBROC have been announced.

Borrowed Blue, a country rock band from the Lake Cumberland region, will perform Friday, Aug. 8, according to Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Director Bruce Carpenter.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, the versatile group Caught Red Handed will entertain the festival crowd.

Ranging in age from 22 to 35, the members of Borrowed Blue are lead vocalist Matt “The Coop” Cooper, drummer Brandon “Pretty Boy” Davis, Jordan Latham on rhythm guitar, and Jay Gregory on lead electric guitar and harmonies.

Believing in God and union, Borrowed Blue aims to be patriotic to Kentucky’s past times and traditions. They also share a passion for UK basketball and bourbon.

Cooper’s vocals are likened to Darius Rucker and Scott Stapp of Creed. Their sound is said to have its roots with the music they grew up listening to — Metallica, Zeppelin, Skynyrd, George Thorogood, Garth Brooks and Keith Whitley — only “brought to life in ‘new’ and contemporary Borrowed Blue fashion.”

Dubbed “the hardest-working band in Central Kentucky,” Caught Red Handed has opened for groups including The Little River Band, The Grass Roots, Kansas, Blood Sweat & Tears, Blackfoot, Jefferson Starship, 38 Special and, most recently, Exile.

Its members include Band Manager/Drummer John Stinnett; Jack Kennedy provides lead vocals and plays the harmonica and guitar; Dan Bourne plays the keyboards and provides vocals; James Calhoun is the lead guitarist also providing vocals and percussion; Todd Starnes plays bass guitar and sings; and providing sound and lighting is member Dave Clark.

The group’s playlist includes hits that span the decades, like Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl,” “Boogie Shoes” by KC & The Sunshine Band, “Hurt So Good” by John Mellencamp, and “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman. The playlist also includes hits from other genres including “Fast As You” by Dwight Yoakum and “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash.

More entertainment for Thursday, Friday and Saturday is being booked.

Carpenter said he has told the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Board he hopes for a national act at this year’s festival but nothing has been set yet.

The 2014 NIBROC will include the parade on Thursday, performances of the play “The Last Train to NIBROC,” and games and activities in Nibroc Park. The festival will see the return of other fun activities to Depot Street while a perennial favorite — the volleyball tournament — will return to the empty lot across from Sanders Park.
