House named new police chief:

CORBIN — By Kristina Smith

Staff Writer

The London Police Department officially has a new chief of police.

Major Derek House was appointed to the position Tuesday after spending the past 19 years with the department.

House began working at the department in May 1995 as a patrolman. Two years later he became a K9 officer and worked with several local, state and federal agencies.

In November 1998, House was promoted to sergeant and served in that position until 2008 when he reached the rank of lieutenant. House was promoted to captain in January 2011 and was then promoted to major just a year and a half later in 2012. At that time, he was assigned to the position of assistant chief.

House has received every medal in the police department including the Medal of Valor.

House has also been actively involved with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E) program since 1999 and was named coordinator of the Laurel County program in 2007.

House is excited to continue his time with the department in a new role.

“I’m very happy with the opportunity,” House said.

House looks to continue moving the department forward in the right direction, which he says means a stronger relationship with the community.

“I’m focused on making sure our guys have what they need and that we continue building our relationship with the community,” House said.

House was appointed interim chief in April after the resignation of former chief Stewart Walker.
