POLICE ROUNDUP: Two children in car with intoxicated driver

LAUREL COUNTY — An intoxicated man driving on the wrong side of the road had two kids in the car with him, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

Deputy Mikey Ashurst was traveling along Echo Valley Road around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday when a vehicle came over a hilltop on his side of the road.

Ashurst turned his vehicle around and activated his emergency equipment to make a stop. However, he had to follow the vehicle for half a mile and Deputy Kenton Scharf had to block the vehicle’s path to make it stop.

When deputies approached the vehicle they noticed a strong alcoholic odor and an open beer. Two children were in the vehicle.

Dennis Cox, 36, of London, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle under the influence under aggravating circumstances, second offense, failure to wear a seat belt and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle.

Cox was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Assisting at the scene were Sgt. Brett Reeves and Deputy Brandon Broughton.
