Man appears in court for Subway robbery, Corbin, KY

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

The man accused in the robbery of the Subway at the Forest Hills shopping center on Cumberland Falls Highway in Corbin was indicted Monday.

Charles Gray, 44, of Collierville, Tenn., was indicted for first-degree robbery after allegedly threatening to use physical force against Subway employee Ashley Perkins while armed with a handgun April 17.

“He came in asking for cookies and left with a drawer full of cash.”

That’s what Perkins said after an armed suspect robbed her at closing time that day in April. Corbin Police responded to the scene, and issued a description of the suspect.

That description turned out to be Gray, who was listed as having a residence on Gordon Hill Pike in Corbin.

Knoxville, Tenn. Police said Gray is from Collierville, which is outside of Memphis, Tenn.

Corbin Police Major Rob Jones said in April that several tips were called in about the suspect. Police believed he was traveling to the Memphis area.

The entire robbery was captured on surveillance video, according to officers.

After his arrest by the Knoxville Police, Jones said Gray allegedly told officers that he would have attempted to shoot them had he brought his gun with him. Jones said Gray was arrested while attempting to cash a Western Union check at the Kroger on Chapman Highway in Knoxville.

According to Darrell DeBusk, public information officer with the KPD, Gray allegedly robbed three Subway restaurants in Knoxville as well as a CVS Pharmacy there. He is also suspected in an armed robbery of a Subway restaurant in Sevierville, Tenn.

Gray was jailed in the Knox County Jail after his arrest. DeBusk said he faces four counts of aggravated robbery. According to Knox County Detention Facility records, Gray was jailed under four separate $35,000 bonds.

DeBusk said additional charges may be placed by the KPD pending the outcome of their ongoing investigation.

DeBusk said Sevierville Police will likely have charges filed as well.
