In a special meeting Wednesday, the Laurel County Fiscal Court moved $50,000 from the occupational tax fund to the jail fund.
According to District 1 Magistrate Ray Crawford, the money was already budgeted and was going to be moved at the regular fiscal court meeting. However, a need for the money arose before the scheduled meeting when the fiscal court fell short of funds to pay the jail staff and so a special meeting was required to approve the transfer of the money.
According to Laurel County Judge/Executive David Westerfield, money from the state and federal government was “late” and so money had to be transferred to make payroll and pay some other bills. Westerfield said money does not always arrive on time from the state and federal government, so the procedure is fairly routine.
