Precinct to vote on alcohol

Laurel County golf club wants to sell by the drink

CORBIN — By Kristina Smith / Staff Writer

A Laurel County golf club wants to sell alcohol by the drink.

Laurel County Judge Executive David Westerfield said he received a petition containing 159 signatures of London East precinct residents on June 16. This petition asked for the sale of alcoholic beverages at Crooked Creek Golf Club.

Westerfield verified 145 of the signatures, pushing the petition just past the required 141 signatures needed to call for the vote. According to Westerfield, 25 percent of the precinct’s registered voters, who also voted in the last presidential election, had to sign the petition asking for the vote on alcohol sales.

A special election has been set for Tuesday, Aug. 19, in the London East precinct, which covers a portion of land spanning from KY-229, around Conley Road, to KY-80 in Laurel County, according to county Clerk Dean Johnson. Crooked Creek is in this precinct.

Johnson said the vote will take place at Laurel County Fire Department Station 1, just as it would for any other election. The deadline to register for the vote is 28 days before the election, or July 22.

The proposition on the election ballot will ask voters, “Are you in favor of the sale of alcoholic beverages by the drink at Crooked Creek Golf Club?”
