Drugs suspected in fatal Knox County crash

CORBIN — By Becky Killian / Managing Editor

Drug use may have been a factor in a crash Monday in Knox County in which an 11-year-old boy was killed, according to Kentucky State Police Post-10 Harlan Public Affairs Officer Trooper Shane Jacobs and Sgt. Jimmy Young.

The crash happened after 5 p.m. in the Dewitt community as Melissa A. Collett, 34, of Flat Lick, drove a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am south on KY 223. Young said Collett crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 2008 Mitsubishi Galant driven by Dominique Broughton, 22, of Girdler.

Broughton and three children in her vehicle were taken by Knox County EMS to Knox County Hospital. They were later transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington.

On Tuesday, a UK hospital official said Broughton had been discharged. The condition of the three children wasn’t known.

Collett was trapped in her car and had to be extricated by the Stinking Creek Fire Department. She was taken to Knox County Hospital and was later transferred to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

A hospital official said Collett remained in the hospital in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

An 11-year-old boy who was in Broughton’s vehicle was declared dead at Knox County Hospital due to injuries he sustained in the crash, Young said.

Jacobs said blood was drawn from Collett and that while drug use is suspected, it can’t be confirmed until test results are completed.

The investigation continues by Trooper Dallas Eubanks. He was assisted by KSP Sgt. Jimmy Young, Knox County Sheriff’s Department, Barbourville Police Department and the Knox County Coroner’s Office.
