Arrest made after 5-hour manhunt

Man was considered ‘armed and extremely dangerous’

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

Laurel County deputies arrested a man they said was “armed and extremely dangerous” after a five-hour manhunt Wednesday.

And all it took was a cell phone.

Zachary L. Franke, 20, of London, was jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center, where he remains under an unknown bond amount.

Sheriff John Root said deputies responded to Konitzer Lane in the Sublimity area just before 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Those deputies learned that a man staying at a residence there, for no apparent reason, fired a .38 revolver in the direction of a cleaning lady at that same residence, Root said.

After the revolver was fired, the man fled the home on a bicycle, the sheriff added.

That’s when the word was put out to track this man down. He was described as wearing a mustard-colored shirt and blue jeans, sporting a military-style haircut, carrying a camouflage backpack and riding a white bike.

He was last spotted heading toward Lily on KY-1006.

The sheriff’s office and its Special Response Unit, along with London city police officers, began an intensive search in the apartment and residential areas near the area around Flea Land on KY-229.

Root explained that law enforcement searched that area because Franke’s cell phone was being “pinged,” — and that ping showed Franke was reportedly in that area.

At 7:45 p.m., one team consisting of deputies Gilbert Acciardo and Andrew Lawson as well as London Officer Rick Cloyd were searching the back parking lot of the Flea Land property — and found Franke.

Root said he was allegedly hiding in a portable restroom — and was arrested on the spot without incident.

The gun Franke allegedly used was also found inside the restroom.

Franke now faces charges of first-degree wanton endangerment and theft by unlawful taking, a firearm. Franke allegedly stole the gun he reportedly fired from the home where everything began.

He is slated for his first court appearance for these charges Friday.

Coordinating the searches were Root, Captain Rodney Van Zant, who led the Sheriff’s office SRU, and London City Police Major Derek House.

In addition, Laurel Sheriff’s officers who assisted included Lt. Chuck Johnson, Senior Sgt. Greg Poynter, deputies Daniel Grigsby, Gilbert Acciardo, Andrew Lawson, and detectives Jason Back and Josh Scott.

London City Police officers who assisted include: Major Derek house, Captain Darrell Kilburn, Sgt. Ritchie Reynolds, Sgt. Doug Thomas, and patrolmen Jeremy Shell, Daryl Zanet and Rick Cloyd.

Scott continues to investigate.
