Public meeting to discuss Bypass

The Times-Tribune

CORBIN — By Becky Killian / Editor

The original vision for the Corbin Bypass included the possibility its northern portion might some day be extended as far as Interstate 75.

Now, a public information meeting is planned for Thursday to discuss whether that extension should occur.

During the meeting, which will be held from 5-7 p.m. at Lynn Camp High School, area residents can ask questions, voice concerns and review maps with representatives from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, according to Jonathan Dobson, public affairs officer for the Cabinet’s District 11 office in Manchester.

Dobson emphasized there are no definite plans to extend the bypass, also known as Hwy. 3041, from its current end at U.S. 25E north in Knox County into Laurel County. The meeting is simply a part of a study to determine if area residents are interested in a bypass extension and whether the idea is feasible and potentially useful.

“It’s been a long time and part of this process is trying to understand how population changes in the Corbin area have impacted these plans,” Dobson said.

If the project were to occur, Dobson said the bypass could be extended so it is a half-moon shape that arcs back to I-75 — which could provide Corbin with another exit north of Exit 29. Or, if the extension doesn’t reach that far, it could go to U.S. 25 between Corbin and London.

During Thursday’s meeting, Dobson said cabinet representatives plan to compile a list of areas a bypass extension would have to avoid — such as family cemeteries, abandoned coal mines, historical structures and toxic dumps.

“It’s all on the table right now,” Dobson said.

The meeting has no formal structure so members of the public can stop by anytime during the two-hour period to talk to a Cabinet representative.

Dobson said the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will spend $500,000 for the study. If the study were to proceed beyond the initial meeting, more meetings would be held to keep the public informed and to provide people with the opportunity to comment.
