Two crashes, two arrests for DUI in Whitley

CORBIN — By John L. Ross and Kristina Smith / Staff Writers

Two women face charges after two separate crashes in Whitley County Thursday.

Vanessa Adams, 28, of Corbin, was driving her two-door black Chevrolet Cavalier toward Corbin on Cumberland Falls Highway late Thursday afternoon.

Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Brian Lawson said witnesses allege Adams had been driving erratically prior to the crash. “She had been weaving in and out of traffic, crossing both the centerline and white line,” the deputy explained.

Seconds before the crash, Lawson said she drove off the right side of the road, overcorrected and came head-on into the path of a Chevrolet Equinox, driven by 46-year-old Tammy Browne, of Corbin.

“She (Browne) pulled three feet off the road trying to avoid (Adams),” Lawson said. The two vehicles actually crashed in the grass on the side of the road in front of Davis Salvage.

Browne was transported from the scene by crews with Whitley County EMS. Lawson said she was treated for her injuries at Baptist Health Corbin and released.

Adams remained in the vehicle after the crash for some time — Lawson and Kentucky State Police Trooper A.J. Bunch approached the vehicle and requested she come out.

Lawson gave her the option of performing a field sobriety test or being treated for possible injuries — initially, she chose to be treated.

However, moments later, she was seen being led from the ambulance. Lawson took her behind his vehicle and performed field sobriety tests — and shortly thereafter placed her in handcuffs.

She was taken to Baptist Health Corbin for treatment, then taken to the Whitley County Detention Center.

She remains jailed there on an unknown bond and faces charges of first-degree wanton endangerment, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants, and driving without insurance. Lawson added that a search of her vehicle uncovered several Suboxone strips inside the car.

Members with the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department assisted at the scene of that crash.

A single-vehicle crash landed a second woman in jail Thursday.

Danielle Bundy, 37, of Rockholds, was traveling northbound on KY-26 when she crashed her truck.

Whitley County Sheriff’s Sgt. David Lennon administered a field sobriety test to Bundy and determined her to be under the influence.

Upon searching Bundy, Lennon allegedly found marijuana in her pocket.

Bundy sustained minor injuries but refused treatment from Whitley County EMS.

She faces charges of driving under the influence, driving without a license and possession of marijuana. She remains jailed in the Whitley County Detention Center under an unknown bond amount.

Lennon continues the investigation.

Woodbine Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department crews assisted at the scene.
