Rededication of historical marker planned

CORBIN — By Charlotte Underwood / Staff Writer

Kentucky’s early history will be celebrated this weekend with a rededication of the Hazel Patch historical marker at Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park.

Re-enactors, state and local officials and direct descendants of Daniel Boone will be on site at 1 p.m. Saturday for the rededication ceremony.

According to event organizers, many of the first settlers to travel to newly opened lands in what is now Kentucky traveled the Boone Trace, marked in 1775 by Daniel Boone and his party of trailblazers.

A section of the original Boone Trace is preserved within the boundaries of Levi Jackson State Park.

By 1792, less than 20 years later, Kentucky was so well populated that it became the 15th state to join the union.

From what is now Levi Jackson Park, Boone and his party traveled along the Little Laurel River to Hazel Patch, just north of present-day London. Hazel Patch was an important crossroad for early settlers who had come through Cumberland Gap to settle in what is now Central Kentucky.

It was at Hazel Patch that Boone Trace turned northeast where the Boone party founded Boonesborough on the Kentucky River. The other fork led westward on Skagg’s Trace to Logan’s Fort in present-day Lincoln County. The original Kentucky Historical Society marker at Hazel Patch was first dedicated in 1950.

Tours of the actual Hazel Patch on Highway 490 in Oakley will be offered after the rededication of the marker. Maps will be available to all who wish to follow a tour leader in their own vehicles.

In addition, a small bus will be available for those who do not wish to drive to the site.

Levi Jackson Wilderness Road State Park is located on 998 Levi Jackson Mill Road just south of London on U.S. 25 South.

Everyone is invited to join the celebration which will be held in the amphitheater at Levi Jackson. If it rains, the event will be moved to nearby shelter No. 1.

There will be ample parking, as well as golf carts available to assist those with mobility issues, according to organizers.
