CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A Williamsburg pair remains jailed at the Whitley County Detention Center after a robbery at Young’s Grocery on KY 904 Tuesday.

According to Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, one male and one female attempted to steal items from the store and brandished weapons.

Surveillance video captured some of the events — including several witnesses who stepped in to help.

Arrested was Roy William Lawson Jr., 36, and Rebecca Gari Lawson, 37, both of Maple Creek Road.

Witnesses at the scene said Roy Lawson used an axe handle, and that Rebecca Lawson possessed a tire iron.

Harrell said both subjects fled the parking lot of the store.

The two were eventually apprehended with the assistance of Kentucky State Police and the Williamsburg Police Department, according to Harrell.

Rebecca Lawson now faces charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree criminal mischief. Roy Lawson was arrested and transported by deputies to Baptist Health in Corbin for treatment of injuries sustained during his altercation with the store owner and bystanders who reportedly defended the store owner.

Roy Lawson is charged with first-degree robbery.

There were no serious injuries during the robbery, and Harrell said an investigation continues.
