The City of Corbin wants another way to make summertime at the City Pool more fun. And during Monday’s City Commission meeting, they took the first step for a splash pad at the pool.
It came about after commissioners approved a resolution, authorizing the city to file a land and water grant with the state Department for Local Government for the Corbin Parks and Recreation Department.
The Cumberland Valley Area Development District is assisting on the grant for the city, which is for $25,000.
City Clerk Erin Tye added, “We’re obligated for 50 percent and we’ll match that in kind.”
To go along with the grant application, council members also approved Mayor Williard McBurney to sign the matching fund letter for the splash pad project.
A public hearing for the proposed splash pad will be held Thursday, April 18 at 1 p.m. in the Princess McBurney Center.
Earlier in their regular meeting at Corbin City Hall, commissioners heard a presentation from James Baker and Nancy Storms of American General Life Insurance to offer life and disability insurance to city employees, their spouses and children.
Storms said the company, which has a local office in London, also offered a “quality of life” policy, which gives policyholders a chance to obtain their death benefits before they die.
Both wanted permission from the city commission to make a presentation to the employees. Baker and Storms were told that city employees currently have the option to buy life insurance from Aflac or Colonial Insurance through voluntary employee contributions. After some discussion, the American General representatives were given permission to make their presentation.
For the third time, bids were closed pertaining to the city’s fire station renovation, but, like the last two times, no bids were received. City Clerk Tye told the session she had talked to City Attorney Bob Hammons about the situation. Hammons, who was not present at the session, told Tye that since the city had advertised for bids three times, the city could now negotiate on getting the services for the fire station’s renovation on their own. A motion was made in regards to doing just that, and was approved.
Two actions were taken in regards to two motions approved during the commission’s February meeting.
One included a resolution to approve the lease of three new cruisers for the Police Department, as well as all supporting documents pertaining to the lease.
On Feb. 11, commissioners approved authorizing City Manager Marlon Sams to purchase the three vehicles from Freedom Dodge in Lexington. Tye said at Monday’s meeting the agreement would cover a three-year term at four annual payments of $24,801.86 per year. The total purchase comes up to $74,405.58.
The other involved the city’s Police, Fire and Public Works Departments being awarded $5,000 each from Whitley County, with the money coming from the county’s share of coal severance tax revenue.
The city commission also approved that motion at its Feb. 11 session, and at Monday’s meeting, they approved McBurney to sign a memorandum of agreement for the three departments to purchase equipment that they need.
In other actions, the commission approved a consent to the leasehold mortgage at the London-Corbin Airport, subject to approval by the Airport Board and the City of London. The airport is owned by both the cities of Corbin and London. In addition, a tax refund of $96.63 was approved to William Patterson, who was eligible for the Homestead exemption. A garbage credit of $90.25 was approved for SEKRI (Southeastern Kentucky Rehabilitation Industries, Inc.), while commission members approved a $500 donation to the “NIBROC - Just Lose It” program, and declared a 1995 Chevy pickup as surplus property in the police department.
A discussion on this year’s NIBROC festival was tabled until the next meeting, scheduled for May 13. Toward the end of the meeting, Phyllis Jobe and Ramona Davis came to request the city to pave the street at Blair Park Condominiums off Gordon Hill Pike. McBurney told Jobe the city would look into getting it done.
He also commented on last month’s online auction of surplus equipment, including two large trucks that were no longer operating. The city used the website eBay for the auction, which was approved by the commission at the March meeting.
“We did that last month, and we did pretty well. It was faster, more efficient and this is the way to go from now on,” McBurney stated.
In a separate note related to the city’s Spring Clean Up this month, the Corbin Public Works Department has placed three open-top dumpsters at various locations to be used by city residents for the clean-up.
One dumpster is located outside the gate at the City Garage, while the second one is on Master Street next to Little Caesar’s, and the third is at the lot past the Shell Station on Cumberland Falls Highway.
