Rumor prompts lockdown

CORBIN — By Jeff Noble / Staff writer

A report of a gunman at the Gray Post Office got some people’s minds inquiring Tuesday afternoon.

As it turned out, the report was just a rumor. But that same rumor caused Lynn Camp High School to be put on lockdown for just over a half-hour.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office found out nothing of the sort happened at the post office, but they think the rumor could have started because of a drug roundup in the Gray area earlier in the day.

The first rumblings came during the noon hour, when the Knox County Sheriff’s Office started getting some calls about the alleged gunman. One of those who checked out the situation to see if it was fact or rumor was Deputy Adam Townsley.

“We had the drug roundup earlier today in Knox County and Gray was one of the areas that was in the roundup. From the best that we can gather, there was a report that we had a lot of cruisers in the area, and because of that, a report that a gunman was at the Gray Post Office. I don’t know where the report came from,” Townsley said.

With calls coming in, Townsley added they decided to do some calling of their own.

“We called dispatch, and they hadn’t gotten any calls. And we called State Police in Harlan, and they hadn’t gotten any calls, either. So Sheriff Pickard and I went to the post office in Gray. Nothing had happened there.”

An employee at the Gray Post Office agreed the report was a rumor.

“There were no problems here,” said postal worker Karen Fields.

Not taking chances, the nearby high school went on lockdown just minutes before 1 p.m.

“We had Lynn Camp High School temporarily on lockdown, pending more information about a situation at the Gray Post Office. The lockdown started at 12:50 p.m. We called the school at 1:25 p.m. to cancel it. There were no problems at the school during the lockdown,” said Frank Shelton, the public relations officer for Knox County Public Schools.
