Cruiser struck during chase

Woman leads police on high-speed pursuit, child found in her car

CORBIN — Times-Tribune Staff Report

A Frakes woman who had a child in her car was arrested Saturday after she led police on a chase during which she struck a deputy’s car head on, according to Barbourville Police Detective Steve Owens.

Ivory Melas, 28, was arrested after Barbourville police were called to a shoplifting complaint at Walmart after 5 p.m. Though Melas had left the store on foot when police arrived, her vehicle was identified and the chase began when she fled onto U.S. 25E, Owens said.

Police tried to stop Melas, but she turned south and led police around several side streets then back on the highway, where Owens said she was almost struck when she pulled into the path of a tractor trailer.

Melas then made two U-turns through the median before leaving the highway for KY 11N, where officers continued to chase her for several miles. When Melas turned onto a dead-end driveway, she made a U-turn and struck a Knox County Sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle in her attempt to escape.

When the chase ended, Owens said officers found a small child behind the driver’s seat of the car Melas drove.

Melas was arrested and the child was placed in the care of Social Services. The Kentucky State Police were called in reference to the collision involving the deputy.

According to JailTracker, Melas was booked into the Knox County Jail and faces more than a dozen charges, many traffic related, including first-degree criminal mischief, first-degree disorderly conduct, first-degree fleeing/evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment (police officer), resisting arrested, operating under the influence and theft by unlawful taking. She also had two outstanding bench warrants.

Barbourville Police Sgt. Randy Clark is the investigating officer. Others assisting were Barbourville Police Sgt. Winston Tye, the Knox County Sheriff’s Department and the Kentucky State Police.
