UC holds Barefoot for Barefeet event

CORBIN — By John L. Ross / Staff Writer

It was all about the shoes.

On Tuesday, the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg held its annual Barefoot for Barefeet event in the O. Wayne Rollins Center on campus.

According to the university’s Special Events Coordinator Wes Chandler, children who were considered “in need” were bused to the campus from two local elementary schools.

And that’s when the volunteers went into action.

“We had volunteers from volleyball, archery, women’s wrestling, men’s soccer, the Multimedia and Athletic Services department, and also three Insights classes,” Chandler said, explaining that “Insights” classes are “like an orientation class for freshman.”

Those volunteers gathered the elementary students into the gym, according to Chandler.

Those children then had their feet washed by those volunteers, and receive a new pair of shoes for the school year.

“There were 200 kids who participated in the Barefoot for Barefeet event,” Chandler said. “(About) 100 of the students were from Boston Elementary and the other 100 were from Pleasant View Elementary.”

This is the second year for the event.

“We started doing this last year,” Chandler explained. “For a home game, our women’s basketball coach, Melissa Irvin, will coach barefoot to help raise awareness in southeastern Kentucky.”

All the money for the shoes was provided through fundraising efforts, according to Chandler.
