Laurel deputy seeks driver in Friday hit-and-run crash

A hit-and-run driver who tried to conceal the car involved in the crash beneath road signs, bed springs, sheets, blankets and bags behind a home on Happy Hollow Road is being sought, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

The crash happened about 4:55 p.m. Friday when the driver of a silver Chevrolet Cavalier drove into the path of a northbound Ford Fusion on U.S. 25 about six miles south of London. The driver of the Fusion swerved to avoid a collision but was struck in the side. The person driving the Cavalier drove  away from the scene of the crash.

Deputy Kevin Berry investigated the crash and received information that the Cavalier had been spotted on Happy Hollow Road. After Berry found the car hidden behind a mobile home, no one would answer the door at the home. Berry also found a part of the Ford Fusion stuck on the Cavalier, which is registered to Ashley Howard, of McKee.

Berry impounded the Cavalier and is currently looking for the driver of the vehicle. He continues his investigation.

Man reportedly fires gun at woman

A man was arrested Friday after he reportedly fired a .40-caliber handgun at his girlfriend, barely missing her, according to knox County Sheriff John Pickard.

Freddie Gregory was arrested after deputies responded to Prewitt Road in Woodbine. He spoke to the girlfriend, who said she had argued with her boyfriend and, when she decided to leave, he fired the shot.

Gregory was found shortly afterwards and told deputies where he hid the gun. He is charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tampering with physical evidence.

Manchester man arrested

A Manchester man was arrested Saturday on several traffic charges after he was stopped for speeding, according to Laurel County Sheriff John Root.

David P. Thompson, 34, was arrested after he was stopped shortly after midnight by Deputy Kevin Berry for driving 75 mph in a 55 mph zone two miles east of London on Hwy. 80, Root said.

Berry determined Thompson was driving on a DUI suspended license, had no insurance, had cancelled license plates on the vehicle, as well as numerous other violations. Thompson also had two active bench warrants for driving on a DUI suspended license, operating a motor vehicle under the influence, open alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle and numerous other traffic offenses. Thompson was arrested and jailed in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
