A Benham man accused of stabbing a Lily man to death Dec. 12 appeared in the Laurel County District Court Monday for his preliminary hearing.

Hubert D. Lewis, 25, was scheduled in the hearing to go before a Laurel County grand jury Jan. 17 after probable cause was found by Laurel County District Court Judge Skip Hammons.

Lewis reportedly stabbed Clinton Ray Howard, 60, twice in the neck during an argument. Lewis’ girlfriend, Tiffany Jackson, called 911 and Lewis fled. Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling declared Howard dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted Dec. 13 in Frankfort confirmed Lewis’ victim died of multiple stab wounds, Bowling said.

Lewis was sought by police until he turned himself in to the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office. He was brought back to Laurel County by deputies.

A folding knife with an open blade was found about two miles from Howard’s home. Root said it is believed the knife is the weapon used against him.

Lewis is being held in the Laurel County Correctional Center on a $250,000 bond.
