Crash injures 3 Knox Ambulance employees

Slick road conditions believed the cause

Times-Tribune Staff Report

Three employees with the Knox County Ambulance Service were injured after an ambulance en route to the hospital with a patient was hit by an oncoming car on Kentucky 11.

The head-on crash occurred Monday evening on Ky. 11 North near Barbourville. Knox County Ambulance Director Mike Trent said an oncoming car slid into the northbound lane due to slick road conditions, striking the ambulance. Two EMTs and one paramedic in the ambulance were transported to the hospital. Trent said the patient was flown out for medical care, but the patient’s injuries were not due to the wreck.

Trent said the driver of the other car was also taken to Knox County Hospital. The ambulance employees had all been released as of Tuesday but were not back at work, Trent said.

At the time of the wreck, Trent said responding EMTs had to fight back emotion to get their job done.

“Because that’s their partners, they were very torn up and excited, but you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do,” he said.
