Whitley to add preschool classroom

Classroom to be a part of Oak Grove Early Childhood Center

During its regular meeting last week, the Whitley County Board of Education approved the creation of another preschool classroom at Oak Grove Elementary’s new Early Childhood Center.

Whitley County School District Superintendent Lonnie Anderson said the school district had a growth in the enrollment of pre-school students and an additional classroom was needed.

The classroom will be part of the Oak Grove Early Childhood Center, which is slated to be finished in October.

The board also approved hiring a preschool teacher and instructional position to staff the new classroom.

In the meantime, students from the new class will be transported to Whitley North Elementary until construction is completed on the new classroom.

During the regular meeting last week the board also:

•Accepted funding from Save the Children to create an Early Steps to Success program at Pleasant View Elementary

•Approved employing Ross-Tarrant Architects to provide planning services for the development of a master site development plan, coordinate construction activities related to the turn lane at Whitley East Elementary and advise the District Facilities Planning Committee on issues relevant to development of the district’s facilities plan. The fee schedule will not exceed a total cost of $45,000.

• Approved the re-opening of the daycare center at Oak Grove Elementary pending the completion of the Early Education Center and state approval.
