Knox County big boom still unexplained

Times-Tribune Staff Report

A loud boom that shook windows and frightened residents in eastern Knox County is still, as yet, unexplained.

Knox County Judge Executive J.M. Hall said the “boom” occurred at about 12:20 a.m. Monday morning and that reports of the noise came in from about a 10 mile radius that included parts of Bimble, Flat Lick and Boone Heights.

He said several hundred calls came into dispatch asking what caused it, but no explanation has yet been found.

Area fire departments searched the general area, but found no fire or explosion. Hall said the Federal Aviation Administration was contacted, but no planes had flight plans filed that would have placed them in the area. A gas line break was also considered, but no reports of a broken line have been filed, Hall said.

“We don’t know what it was,” he said.
