A squirrel that made its way into a transformer caused a power outage for part of the city of Corbin Wednesday afternoon.
Steve Carmichael with the City Utilities Commission said the creature created a power outage for about half an hour.
“The squirrel got up into the buswork of the substation, which is somewhat a vulnerable spot,” he said. “We’ve got squirrel guards, so it really surprised me that one did get in there.”
The outage affected most of east and north Corbin, including downtown and Master Street.
The squirrel was shocked and killed, and its death tripped one of the breakers.
Carmichael said the outage was unusual because the city takes measures to prevent wildlife from getting into the substation, including guards and owl decoys.
