SCC to offer grant program for middle schoolers

Somerset Community College is pleased to announce that the Kentucky College Access Network in collaboration with the Prichard Committee and the Council on Postsecondary Education has awarded grant funding for a middle school outreach services project. The College Works Program will partner with schools from Clay, Jackson, and Laurel counties to provide middle school students with college preparedness information and career education information.

The “College Works Program” will provide instructional workshops and services at the host schools and will also sponsor campus activities at the SCC Laurel Campus. The participant group will be current seventh graders who will enter into the eighth grade in the Fall 2009.

Activities are designed to increase the knowledge base of the student and their families about college access, career education, financial aid, and scholarships. A campus tour as well as interactive workshops for parents and students will facilitate and encourage discussion about college and the importance for students to prepare for high school and college transition success.

The “College Works Program” will be active in its outreach efforts beginning April 1, 2009 and conclude March 31, 2010. James M. Davis, Counselor/Assistant Professor of Psychology at the SCC Laurel Campus will serve as the Project Director and Trent Pool, SCC Admissions Officer in London, will serve as the Academic Coordinator. The collaborative partnerships to assist in the delivery of program services include other SCC faculty and staff, the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority, the Southern Area Health Education Center, and the school Youth Service Centers.
