Businesses offering deals for May 20th

The Times-Tribune is posing a social shopping experiment — What if everyone in the Tri-County banded together to provide a new cash infusion by spending an extra $20 this month? What kind of effect could that have?

Excited about the possibilities, local retailers are offering specials this Wednesday to get shoppers excited about stimulating the economy.

If everyone 18 and older in Laurel, Whitley and Knox counties (an estimated 97,577 people, according to 2008 U.S. Census estimates) spent $20 on May 20 that they weren’t planning to spend, an extra $1.95 million would be pumped into the local economy.

Inside today’s paper, Fabric World owner Jennie Mill is offering a coupon for a 20-percent discount at her store in North Corbin.

“The idea is to get new people in the door, because some people think we just sell quilting, and some think we just do window treatments. But when they see we have thousands and thousands of yards of fabric, plus quilting, comforters, fringes, trims, drapery, upholstery and more, they are amazed,” Mill said. “We are offering 20 percent off on May 20th, which will save some people hundreds of dollars or more.”

Burton Bingham with Access Paging said having an extra boost of customers on May 20th, “would allow me to continue to offer personal and friendly service to my customers on a daily basis.”
