Hounds heating up

Redhounds collect 13 hits in eight-run win over Middlesboro

By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

Jeff Garmon’s Corbin Redhounds are beginning to heat up at the right time.

Corbin captured its fourth win in a row and sixth during its last eight games by knocking off Middlesboro on the road, 16-8.

The Redhounds (18-11) pounded out 13 hits in the win, while using a 10-run third inning to pull away from the Yellow Jackets (9-14).

“I thought with us coming off prom that we lost a bit of focus and that concerned me, but overall, a win is a win,” Garmon said. “We jumped out to a 13-0 lead and got a little comfortable and they came back and made a game of it.”

Corbin took a 3-0 edge in the second inning before scoring 10 runs in the third inning to take a commanding 13-0 lead.

“We swung the bats well,” Garmon said. “We had some guys go up there to the plate and get some big hits.

“When we swing the bat well, we usually have good results,” he added.

Middlesboro tried to rally, but the Redhounds put the game away with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Josh Smith (2-for-4, two RBIs) and Blake Hendrickson (1-for-4, two RBIs) each delivered home runs in the win.

Smith also picked up the win on the mound.

“I thought Josh pitched OK,” Garmon said. “I’ve seen him throw better, but it is what it is.”

Corey Sewell and Caleb Watkins led the way with three hits, while Sewell was a home run away from hitting for the cycle.

Josh Hart drove in two runs, while Brandon Shinkle delivered a double and finished with three RBIs.

“I really like the way we are playing right now,” Garmon said. “We are playing better than we have been and the key is that we’re starting to get people healthy. “Overall, everyone had good swings all day long,” he added. “We were able to capitalize on some mistakes Middlesboro made and that was it.”
