An Artemus man who walked away from a Whitley County Detention Center work-release site was found and returned to custody Sunday night.
George Brewer, 29, was recaptured at his wife’s house in Artemus at around 9:15 p.m. Sunday. Brewer was arrested without incident and returned to the Whitley County Detention Center.
Kentucky State Police Troopers Dallas Eubanks and Jimmy Young assisted jailer Ken Mobley, chief deputy Bob O’Neil and other detention center deputies in the arrest.
Mobley said after Brewer ran on Friday, he and his officers contacted Brewer’s family. After finding out where Brewer’s wife lived, Mobley and the troopers staked out Brewer’s wife’s home and spotted him at around 9:15 p.m. and made the arrest.
Brewer walked away from a work site at Miller Field in Corbin at around 2 p.m. Friday. According to Mobley, Brewer took off his bright jail shirt and walked away from the site, “when heads were turned.”
Mobley said work details are only open to low-risk offenders who have committed non-violent crimes. Brewer was serving time for two counts of receiving stolen property over $300. According to Mobley, Brewer was up for parole in August, but Brewer is now being charged with second-degree escape which could lead to a longer sentence.
