Small fire in Cumberlands apartment

A small fire in a University of the Cumberlands apartment was quickly extinguished by first responders from both the college and the Williamsburg Fire and Rescue Department before the blaze could cause any damage.

“There was a lot of smoke,” Williamsburg Fire Chief James Privett said, “and it took a good while to get the smoke out, but there were no injuries or too much damage.”

According to a statement from U of C public relations spokesperson Daphne Baird, the fire occurred in a director’s apartment in Archer Hall. The director was in the process of moving and had placed a microwave on top of a stove. One of the burners accidentally came on and ignited the microwave, Baird said in the release.

There was no damage to the building, and according to the release, university first responders had the fire under control while the fire department was en route.
