In late October 2012, the world was taken by surprise when Hurricane Sandy struck. Sandy became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record (as measured by diameter with winds spanning 1,100 miles). The storm affected seven different countries killing at least 253 innocent victims along its path. Death and destruction resulted from this brutal storm, but one must not dwell on the negative.
A wise proverb once said, “If you have much, give of your wealth; if you have little, give of your heart.” Giving back is a small price to pay for all the damage done; however, Makaela Stephenson, a young woman from Corbin High School felt she could help.
With a burdened heart for all that was lost in the storm, Makaela took action. From Makaela, to the guidance office, to the principals and the entire faculty at Corbin High School, an idea became a reality. The desire of one student became the spark to ignite the flame.
A committee composed of the presidents of the clubs offered at the high school was formed.
The project was steered by Pam Bishop and Jessica Ledington, two well-respected teachers at the school. Tasks such as making posters, passing out flyers, and collecting money, were distributed among the students.
Not only did the entire school participate but also businesses throughout the community.
You, Me, Coffee, and Tea; Belk; Snappy Tomato’s; Dino’s; Forcht Bank; St. Paul’s Anglican Church; Froyoz; and Fiesta Mexicana all set out a jar to collect money for the cause.
Through the efforts of the school and community combined, a total of approximately $400 was collected. Students then came together to purchase needed supplies which were then donated to the Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy victims. On behalf of the student relief committee, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who gave of their time or finances to help those in need. A special thanks to the members of the committee on which I served, Lexi McKinney, Caleb Dunn, Wayne Logan, Jordan Yung, Cassidy Phipps, Chelsea Gibbs, John Ben Chadwell, Marcus Kuhl, Jessica Sproles, Myranda Thomas, Pavan Anand, Jimmy Garland, Courtney Mullins.
