I spend a lot of time reading and participating in comments on Yahoo news stories. What I find most disturbing of late are all the racist and hate-filled comments.
Take for instance the Boston Marathon bombing. So many of those commenting prior to the bombers being identified were sure the perpetrators were Muslim. From there went the discussion of how Muslims and observers of Islam deserve to be hung or blown to pieces. There was also a jump to a conclusion that it was a black person and from there the talk turned to illegal immigration and how we need to send everyone back to where they came from.
I don’t understand the logic of labeling an entire race or religion based on the atrocities of individuals. Caucasian people and the Christian religion have had their share of individuals committing abominable acts — yet individuals from these groups are the most vocal in their lynch mob mentality.
I would like to know what makes people feel they are better than any other person on this Earth. Is it insecurity? Is it the environment they were raised in?
This mentality can be found in varying races, religions, social statuses and the perception of being “better” than someone else based on height, weight and beauty.
We Americans have come a long way from the days of segregation but it is really scary to read these comments and see how much anger is out there. It’s not even just against those of a different race, but against people who have to rely on government programs to make ends meet.
I realize these are difficult and uncertain times we live in but I truly believe that united we stand, divided we fall. That goes for the human race, not just us white Americans!
