Send some love this Valentine’s Day to Laurel County soldiers serving overseas through the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library’s “Books to Boots” project. The Friends of the library has donated funds to ship boxes of books to soldiers, but are asking for names and donations to further their efforts.
“We know these books are going to find good homes with our overseas soldiers and hopefully give them a good way to relax and unwind during their off-duty hours,” said Peggy Mershon, library director.
Boxes will contain a variety of 10-20 books for servicemen and women who have family ties in Laurel County, while supplies and funds last. The first shipment of books is projected to depart on Jan. 31, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
“Our soldiers may be out of our sight, but they are not out of our thoughts,” said Susan Phelps, president of the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library.
The Friends of the library has donated $500 for this project, which will pay for about 33 boxes of books. Additional donations are welcome. Patrons may sponsor a box for $15 and make checks payable to the Friends of the Laurel County Public Library.
To submit a name and address for a soldier serving overseas, forms are available at the library’s Circulation Desk. For more information, call 606-864-5759 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
