Superintendent gives thanks

CORBIN — At the 87th Kentucky School Board Association’s Annual Conference, I was presented the distinguished 2014 F.L. Dupree Kentucky Superintendent of the Year Award. Corbin Board of Education members, school administrators and family members were present among the 1,000 attendees.

This award is the recognition highlight of my educational career of 49 years. Twenty-two years ago you greeted me with a reception held at Corbin Middle School as your new superintendent. Sally and I still reflect on the unbelievable number of people extending their hand of fellowship and invitation toward us to become a part of the Corbin community. Today, we recognize that it has been your support that has allowed me to receive this award. Thank you!

The F.L. Dupree Award recognizes a superintendent based on outstanding achievements and creative educational administration. In Corbin, that is reflected through the accomplishments and awards received by our students and staff at the regional, state and national levels along with the numerous “innovative” programs offered by the school district.

There have been 16 community leaders to serve as a Corbin Board member during my tenure in Corbin. Each member has faithfully supported actions that BEST serve the needs of our kids. Corbin is recognized in the top five Kentucky school districts and that is only possible with a positive and trusting board-superintendent relationship, working together to achieve student success. I am blessed in having board members to provide vision and directions, allowing me to be your superintendent. In each daily action we seek to meet your mission statement: “Striving to be the BEST.”

Words cannot express my appreciation to our teachers, administrators and support staff, working daily with focus, enthusiasm, and heart to make our schools inviting and successful. You were with me back in the early 1990s as we worked together to meet the rigorous demands and changes in the 1990 KERA Reform Act. Today, we are again challenged with state and federal regulations that brought a new wave of demands in assessment, accountability, effectiveness, standards, technology, etc. These requirements are being successfully implemented with state funding at the 2008 level! You are the BEST!

Parents, business and government leaders, and members of the community are recognized as our partners in providing support and aid to achieve quality educational experiences for our students. We appreciate what you did in the past, what you are doing now and anticipating what you will do in the future. You are making a difference through real world experiences.

I thank you for making the F.L. Dupree Superintendent of the Year a reality.

Superintendent

Ed McNeel,

Corbin

  • Our representatives should co-sponor the PAST Act

As a horse lover and Kentuckian, I support H.R. 1518/S. 1406, the PAST Act, which will reform the federal Horse Protection Act to end the abusive practice of soring walking horses for the sake of an exaggerated and grotesque gait.
