Wear red for heart health month in February

CORBIN — Dare to wear a red dress. February is heart health month and women wear red dresses to help raise awareness about heart disease. My mother had heart disease as a complication of diabetes. Heart disease and heart attacks are the number one killer of women. Women die less from cancer and diabetes. So wear your red dress or red dress pin.

There are ways to reduce your risk of heart disease. Do not smoke! The chemicals damage heart and blood vessels. No amount of smoking or secondhand smoke is safe. If you combine smoking with birth control pills, then you have increased your risk of heart disease greatly.

Exercise reduces your risk of heart disease. Exercise!  Exercise for 30 minutes each day. It lowers risk of high blood pressure high cholestrol, and diabetes. Models and movie stars lose weight by lots and lots of exercise.  Losing weight reduces risk of heart disease.

Eating healthy reduces the risk of heart disease. Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lowfat dairy, beans, and fish such as salmon.  Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in extra virgin olive oil and canola oil, but use in moderation. The omega-3 fatty acids prevent heart disease.

Grapes protect the lining of blood vessels. Eat lots of grapes! Be sure to get regular health screenings. Something called a CT scan of the heart is a new screening that can detects heart disease or damage.

My mother had heart disease. Her heart and blood vessels were damaged but her internal beauty shined for me. I loved my mother!
