Laurel County Sheriff supports Colan Harrell

CORBIN — My name is John Root, and I am the Laurel County Sheriff. I’m writing this letter to urge the residents of Whitley County to re-elect Colan Harrell for Whitley County Sheriff.

My name was used in a recent letter to the editor that criticized Sheriff Harrell. I appreciate that person’s nice words about the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department and me, but I disagree with her comments about Sheriff Harrell.

I believe Sheriff Harrell has done a good job in Whitley County. He turned an absolute mess into a professional department. His department provides law enforcement to a county a few square miles larger than mine with almost $1 million less than my department’s yearly budget.

Also, Sheriff Harrell’s department has held regular drug roundups.

Sheriff Harrell’s work to combat crime and drugs is important to me and all of Laurel County. Criminals don’t stop at the county line. Having good law enforcement in Whitley County helps Laurel County, and vice versa.

As for Sheriff Harrell being in the news, that’s a good thing. That means he and his deputies are doing good work. Whether Sheriff Harrell is wearing a tie or a uniform, it’s good to see a Whitley County sheriff in the news for cracking down on drugs and crime instead of being in the news for committing crimes.

To the citizens of Whitley County, please don’t be distracted by silly criticisms about what clothes your sheriff wears or lies about his budget. I ask you all to focus on facts and the good results Sheriff Harrell has delivered.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root
