Resident complaints about living in ‘no man’s land’

I am writing in response to Samantha Swindler’s editorial (“The Disappearance of North Corbin,” July 26). I live in what is actually the southern tip of North Corbin, the very southern line of Laurel County.

I can walk across the street in front of my house and be in Whitley County.

I couldn’t understand the why’s of the situation until I read this editorial and began to ask some questions. My mailbox sits about 20 feet from the Corbin sewer plant — the ugliest, smelliest and most fly-infested mess anyone would ever want to look at.

I invite any of the Corbin officials to come sit on my front porch in the morning and have a cup of coffee and a doughnut and see what I am talking about. If you come, bring your strongest stomach and a bottle of Mylanta to settle your stomach.

I thought, by being that close to the sewer plant, I was hooked to it, but no sir. My neighbor informed me I had a septic system. When I had a man come to clean it out, he informed me I lived in “no man’s land.” I was told this several times by several people that the plant has chemicals to keep the smell down and the flies limited... but that stuff isn’t working or it’s not being used.

They also told us that they would put something up to hide the mess, but the shrubs they have planted are dying. My neighbor beside me was robbed a couple of weeks ago and eight mailboxes torn down the same night. They had to wait until the Laurel County sheriff’s deputy came to investigate (by the way, they did a great job and caught the person responsible.)

We do most of our shopping in Corbin, as well as doctor, hospital and most everything else, and a Corbin cop can’t drive through our neighborhood, except to feed his horses. It doesn’t seem right.

I know this letter will probably not make a difference, but I just wanted you to know you are not the only one frustrated with the mess. I only moved here a year ago, and only after I had moved did I begin to see something wasn’t right in my neighborhood. Maybe if I can make it another year, I can figure a way to get out of North Corbin.

Steve Stamper, North Corbin
