Reading, Writing and Readyfest

Williamsburg Independent gears up for back-to-school with annual event

By Samantha Swindler / Managing Editor

He got free school supplies and a free, mohawk-styled haircut Tuesday, but when asked if he was ready for school to start next week, Micah Purdie could only muster a “sort of.”

Hey, that’s not bad for an eighth grader.

Purdie was one of dozens of Williamsburg Independent students treated to a free back-to-school haircut by Klassy Kuts salon, and one of hundreds who attended the district’s Readyfest event Tuesday.

The annual open house is coordinated by the Williamsburg Independent Family Resource and Youth Services Center. Breonia Perkins, assistant coordinator for the center, said approximately 600-700 people come to Readyfest each year.

Readyfest is a chance for students to meet their teachers and pick up class schedules. Participants are also treated to free school supplies, a free dinner, health screenings, haircuts and even face painting (provided by the Williamsburg High School cheerleaders.) Dozens of businesses and elected officials donated items for door prizes and giveaways, and organizers said their support is critical.

“We do a handful of events each year,” said Family Resource and Youth Services Coordinator Tammy Stephens. “Without community support, we wouldn’t be able to do something this big for our kids.”

As a small line of children waited for her services, stylist Cheryl Chambers with Klassy Kuts salon in Williamsburg said she was happy to help students start school with a fresh hairstyle and renewed self-esteem.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “It makes me feel good to give back to the community. I wish we had it when I was growing up.”

Representatives from the Whitley County Library, Williamsburg Police, Whitley County EMS, and other area organizations set up booths to give out information and school supplies.

School for Williamsburg Independent students starts Aug. 13.
