W'burg man killed in wreck

A Corbin man faces charges of second-degree manslaughter following a Wednesday afternoon wreck

By Samantha Swindler / Managing Editor

A Williamsburg man was killed Wednesday in a wreck on Hwy. 26 in the Faber community, and the man who hit him has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Alton “Al” Wilson and his wife Doreen were in a red 1995 Jeep Cherokee heading south toward Williamsburg when their car was struck by a silver Jeep SUV headed north, allegedly driven by a driver under the influence.

Mr. Wilson, 63, of Browns Creek Road in Williamsburg, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:23 p.m. by Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley. He was ejected from his vehicle and died of injuries sustained in the accident.

The other driver, Randall Lee Mayne, 44, of Corbin, was treated and released by EMS, but was then taken into police custody and charged with second-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence, having no/expired registration receipts, having no/expired registration plates, and failure to maintain required insurance, according to records from the Whitley County Detention Center, where he was being housed.

“It appears that he (Mayne) impacted another vehicle in the side, which caused both vehicles to lose control,” Croley said. “Mr. Wilson was not wearing a seat belt.”

Mayne’s vehicle had left the roadway and slid on its side before coming to rest in a nearby yard. Mr. Wilson’s vehicle flipped on its top and landed in the middle of the roadway.

Mrs. Wilson was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center by Whitley County Emergency Service. According to BRMC, she was transferred to University of Kentucky Medical Center Wednesday night.

Tina Noe, who lives very close to the accident scene, said she was in the basement when her daughter came downstairs and told her a “truck had exploded” in front of the house. Noe said EMS had already been called when she went outside and saw the wreck and a very injured Mr. Wilson.

“I didn’t do anything but bring towels (to the scene) and just prayed,” Noe said.

Witnesses at the scene said Mayne was driving erratically before the wreck.

Assisting at the scene were Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department, Woodbine Volunteer Fire Department, Whitley County Sheriff’s Department and Kentucky State Police Trooper David Lassiter.

An accident reconstructionist was headed to the scene Wednesday night, and Croley and Lassiter are continuing the investigation.
