Hundreds attend honey bun eating event

By Charlotte Underwood / Staff Writer

Around 400 people attended the London Downtown honey bun eating event that was held in conjunction with Thursday Night Live on July 4th, in an attempt to set a world record of the most people simultaneously eating a honey bun.

Though the goal of having 550 people was not met, the event went “wonderful,” especially considering the weather, according to London Downtown’s Executive Director Chris Robinson.

In order for a new record to be set in the Guinness World Book of Records, more than 500 people would have had to participate.

“The weather kept us from meeting that goal, but we had 379 registered, with over 400 people in attendance so despite the nasty weather, we still had a great evening with Bluegrass music and celebrated the honey bun and the success of a local company,” Robinson said.

The Flowers Bakery in London donated around 1,000 honey buns for the record-breaking attempt. Flowers Bakery is the country’s largest producer of honey buns, making around 300,000 per week to be distributed across the United States.

“The weather was definitely a factor in us not meeting our goal,” Robinson said, adding that he still thought it was “amazing that all the people came out in the rain to attend the event.” He said a future attempt was definitely in the works. Much appreciation was given to Flowers Bakery for providing the honey buns and to Borden’s Dairy, for the donation of milk for the event.

The next Thursday Night Live event will be the downtown music show accented by the 60th birthday bash of Bob’s Ready to Wear on July 25. Local band Sneaky Pete will headline the event.
