1,200 pumpkin on display

Man’s prized crop to be shown at Peach Corner

So what do you do with a 1,200-pound pumpkin? Put it on display, of course.

Beginning Monday morning, Tim Pennington’s Great Pumpkin will be on display at the Peach Corner Farmers Market in Corbin. Pennington’s 1,238-pound pumpkin came in third place at the largest pumpkin contest held recently at Bear Wallow Farm in Nancy. He’s now the proud owner of the second-largest pumpkin in Kentucky (since the second place winner came from Georgia).

The pumpkin will be displayed outside the farmer’s market, along with a 1,094-pound pumpkin and  three, relatively smaller,  500 pounders.  

Peach Corner, located near the intersection of 18th Street and S. Main, will display the pumpkin Monday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Darrell and Judy Hicks, owners of the Peach Corner, said it is an honor to have the Great Pumpkin on display. 

When the Peach Corner closes at the end of October, Pennington said he will “mulch” the pumpkin, and keep the seeds for next year’s record-breaking attempt.
