Future college freshman Cherry Rose wasn’t sure what she would spend the next four years studying, but after winning a regional contest with Internet search engine Google Inc., it might just be the graphic arts.

Rose was chosen as the winner in a six-state region for a competition organized by Google to design a temporary logo for the company. The logo had to use the “Google” word and incorporate the theme, “What if...”

Lynn Camp High School teacher Arthur Canada told his classes about the “Doodle 4 Google” logo design contest after reading about it in a Tennessee newspaper.

“Myself and three other teachers work with the seniors on tying up lose ends before they graduate from high school,” Canada said. “I was working on financial aid at that time and read a newspaper in Knoxville and found out about the competition.”

The winner of the contest will receive a $10,000 college scholarship and the student’s high school will receive $25,000 for technology programs. In her drawn submission, Rose asked “What if we all lend a hand?” and used hands to spell out the word “Google.”

Three logos were submitted from Lynn Camp High School, and Rose’s was chosen the winner from a six-state region for grades in the 10-12 category.

“I was jumping up and down excited,” Rose said of her reaction when she heard about her regional win. Now, Google is flying Rose and her mother out to its headquarters near San Francisco, Calif. on May 21 to announce the national contest winners.

“I’ve barely even been out of state,” Rose said of her travel experience. She said she was looking forward to the California trip and hoped to get to see the Pacific Ocean.

Rose already has the next four years of college paid for after receiving a scholarship to attend University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg. She hasn’t declared a major, but said she is now more seriously considering a job in the graphic arts.

Canada said Rose is “very creative, very intelligent” but she wasn’t sure what her major would be in college.

“She might change her mind now,” Canada said. “I think this has been a confidence builder.”

Voting for the Google logo contest continues through May 18. To vote for Rose’s logo, visit http://www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html.
