May Day Tea

Ossoli Club hosts tea for May Queen candidates

Times-Tribune Staff Report

The candidates for May Day Queen and Tiny May Day Queen were honored at the annual May Day Tea on Sunday, hosted by the Ossoli Club of Corbin.

The tea is a chance for club members to thank the girls for their participation and hand out small gifts, which were purchased from Lloyd-Williams Jewelers.

The Ossoli Club of Corbin’s 65th Annual May Day Festival will be held May 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the Corbin High School Gymnasium.

The May Day Festival involves local children from pre-school through high school in fundraising, community involvement and creative performance. Kindergarten and high school girls participate in the Queens’ races, and children of varying ages participate in the musical program.

Half the May Day proceeds each year go directly to the classrooms and groups that participate in the program. The other half is used for community improvement projects year-round. Large projects in the past have included significant contributions to building improvements at Corbin High School and St. Camillus Academy, but May Day proceeds each year benefit a number of programs, including Girl Scouts, Corbin’s United Effort and the Corbin Public Library.

In the lead...

In the second week of May Day voting, Sarah Parks leads the May Queen race with the most votes.

Sarah is the 15-year-old daughter of Jeff and Lee Parks.

In second and third place are Rachel Mathes and Katie Williamson, respectively.

In the Tiny Queen race, Taylor Ann Miller leads the candidates.

Taylor is the 4-year-old daughter of Dr. James D. and Lisa A. Miller.

In second and third place are Cara Durham and Lauren Shackleford, respectively.

To vote for a candidate of either age, just make a donation to her fundraising campaign at any sponsoring merchant. Votes cast by check should be made payable to the Corbin Ossoli Club.

The girls who raise the most votes in their age competition will be crowned the May Day Queen and May Day Tiny Queen.

Community members can vote for candidates through noon Friday. Sponsorship boxes are located at Maggie J’s, Curves Fitness, Gibson’s Music, Shea’s Fine Jewelry, Corbin 1-Hour Cleaners, Morton’s Discount Pharmacy, Lloyd-Williams Jewelers, Hometown Bank on Cumberland Falls Highway, Cottongim Drugs, Brenda’s Treasures, and Corbin Flower Shop.

For more information, contact May Day Chair June Martin at 528-0562.
