‘NIBROC, Just Lose It’ begins Saturday

CORBIN — By Jeff Noble / Staff Writer

While this year’s NIBROC is less than four months away, some of you may be thinking about shedding some extra pounds. If that’s the case, the 3rd annual “NIBROC, Just Lose It” weight loss competition is just around the corner.

This year’s competition begins this Saturday, and concludes on Saturday, Aug. 10, during the final day of the 61st annual NIBROC Festival in Corbin.

While many who enter dream not only of dropping some weight, they also have visions of the cash they’ll win for being the grand prize winner.

Corbin’s deputy city collector, Roberta Webb, said Tuesday afternoon there is a lot more to it than that — it involves making Corbin the healthiest city in Kentucky.

“The actual reason we want to have it is because we want to help make people healthier. And the competition is fun. Anytime you’re in a contest and you’re discouraged, those weigh-in’s help. If you’re losing weight, that encourages you to go on, and if you’re not losing weight, other people can share their success. That can help you get back on track,” she pointed out.

To enter this year’s competition, you can register in advance at Corbin City Hall between now and Friday, or come to the first weigh-in from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at City Hall.

Keep in mind that those who can’t register this Saturday can also register on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to noon, also at Corbin City Hall. However, no one else may join the competition after the May 4th registration.

After this Saturday’s first weigh-in, additional weigh-ins will take place every two weeks on May 4, May 18, June 1, June 15, June 29, July 13 and July 27.

When the July 27th weigh-in is completed, the 20 people with the highest weight loss percentage will be announced. Those 20 become finalists in the competition and will compete for the grand prize.

The Grand Prize Winner will be named on Saturday, Aug. 10, at the NIBROC Festival, with the time and place to be announced at a later date.

Those are the dates and the basics:

—Each person entering the competition will pay a registration fee of $10, with checks payable to the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce.

—During the weigh-ins, only your weight loss amounts and percentages will be disclosed. The organizers state your actual weight will never be disclosed. Only the “Just Lose It” Committee Members will be able to see your weight at the weigh-ins. Other contestants will be kept at a distance and won’t be able to see the display screen.

—While “NIBROC, Just Lose It” encourages everybody to to get in shape and exercise, their competition is open to adults who are 18 and older. If you enter the competition, it is your responsibility to check with your doctor before starting the weight loss.

—Weigh-ins will be held every two weeks during the competition, with the person having the highest weight loss percentage winning a prize. A health fair will be held by Baptist Health Corbin at the first weigh-in this Saturday. At the second weigh-in on May 4, everyone participating in the competition will receive a free T-shirt. Also, if a committee member sees you wearing their “NIBROC, Just Lose It” T-shirt while you are exercising, you could receive a prize.

—And one more thing — this year’s winner cannot have had weight loss surgery within the last year.

This year’s event is sponsored by the City of Corbin, the Southern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, Bluegrass Family Health, the NIBROC Festival and Baptist Health Corbin.
