‘Mud fest’ kicks off today

CORBIN — By John L. Ross, Staff Writer

Got mud?

No?

Then you need to get down to Williamsburg for the annual Bog in the Burg “mud fest.”

All monies raised at this event will go toward the Williamsburg Police Department’s annual “Shop With A Cop” event held in December.

The Bog in the Burg will be held at the Mud Bog site in Williamsburg.

To get there take Exit 11 off of I-75 and turn left toward KY 92 East for about four-tenths of a mile. Then turn left on Highway 25W, and the Mud Bog site is two-tenths of a mile on the left. There will be signs posted to assist folks in getting there.

ATV registration for the event begins at 5 p.m. today, with the start time for getting muddy at 7 p.m.

All those drivers planning to participate in this event are required to sign a waiver. Participants under age 18 must have a parent or guardian signature.

Mud-slinging won’t just be for the adults — folks age 2 to 92 or more will have the opportunity to get down and dirty.

Those aged 2 to 6 will compete with battery-operated powered ATVs.

Youth ages 7 to 15 will get to compete using four-wheelers sized 50CCs to 90CCs. Those competing in that category will have the chance to win cash and trophies for the top three contenders. An entry fee of $5 is required.

Ages 16 and up will compete with vehicles that are two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive sport/chain driven.

There is a $10 entry fee as well as a gate fee for this event, and participants will compete for cash and trophies for the top three finalists.

Saturday’s muddy events kick-off with registration for four-wheel drives at 3 p.m.

The mud starts flying at 6 that night.

All participants in this event must also sign a waiver. Classes are run by tire size.

There is a minimum of five entries per class required for competition — if fewer than five participate, then the cash prize will be cut in half.

The entry fee for this event is $20 plus the gate fee. All four classes of competition will compete for the top three slots.

The city of Williamsburg and the Whitley County Tourism will also sponsor the Women’s Foot Run in the Mud — the winner of which will receive a cash prize. Participants in this event are required to wear lace-up shoes.

Gate admission is $5, and all those age 12 and under will get in free.

Bobby Freeman, a detective with the Williamsburg Police Department, emphasized proceeds from this event go to a special cause.

“All the money we raise at Bog in the Burg goes to the Shop With A Cop program,” Freeman said, adding the program received approximately $13,000 from the Bog event in 2012.

“My goal this year is $20,000 right now,” Freeman said.

He expects many participants to show for the muddy event. “We hope to have a big crowd this year,” Freeman said. “This is something everyone can enjoy and it’s for the children.”
