Highway equipment operators participate in Equipment Roadeo

CORBIN — Special to The Times-Tribune

The District 11 Equipment Roadeo was held Friday, June 13. David Roaden from Knox County won the overall individual championship.

The annual Roadeo brings together equipment operators from the district’s county garages for a day of friendly competition and fellowship.

 The event allows equipment operators from the district’s county crews to show their skills in operating the equipment they use to maintain state highways in the district. The obstacle courses simulated actual situations equipment operators may encounter in the performance of their duties.

Individual event winners were:

Tandem axle with plow

First place - David Roaden, Knox County

Second place - Jeff Young, Clay County

Third place - Gregory Dewees, Laurel County

Single axle

First place - Johnny Bingham, Knox County

Second place - Don Rose, Knox County

Third place - Devon Adams, Leslie County

Tandem trailer

First place - Ricky Roberts, Clay County

Second place - Chris Collett, Bell County

Third place - Alex Smith, Traffic

Backhoe

First place - Dean Lawson, Clay County

Second place - Shawn Hensley, Bell County

Third place - Brad Foster, Clay County

Grader

First place - David Roaden, Knox County

Second place - Bill Cornelius, Whitley County

Third place - Jerry Jones, Roadside

Tractor

First place - Dean Lawson, Clay County

Second place - Adam Parks, Clay County

The individual equipment operating contest winners and runners-up will advance to a statewide competition against participants from the other 11 highway districts across Kentucky, to be held in August. This year, a regional competition with participants from Kentucky and several nearby states will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park in September.

KYTC District 11 includes Bell, Clay, Harlan, Jackson, Knox, Laurel, Leslie and Whitley counties.
