King’s Heralds to perform Dec. 3 at U of C

Gospel music lovers can hear their favorite music and help pay for a Jellico Hospital project.

The King’s Heralds, a gospel music quartet, will perform Thursday, Dec. 3, at O. Wayne Rollins Center at the University of the Cumberlands.

The concert is being held to raise money to pave the Jellico Community Hospital parking lot, according to Joseph Ghulam, director of the Jellico Community Hospital Foundation.

The King’s Heralds is a quartet originally formed in 1927 in Texas. Members have changed over the years and current performers are Don Scroggs, first tenor, Joel Borg, lead/second tenor, Russell Hospedales, baritone, and Jeff Pearles, bass.

The group performs gospel music in five distinct sounds including high church, traditional, jazz, spirituals and a cappella, according to Joel Borg.

Those who attend the Dec. 3 concert will likely enjoy a performance that lasts up to 90 minutes, including plenty of tunes performed without musical accompaniment.

“You really have to work at it to make sure your pitch and tuning is where it should be,” Borg said about the a cappella pieces. “You’re swinging up there without a safety net.”
