Best beard, best dressed contests held Thursday during festival

No one dared to challenge the manly beard of Charles Smith of Dewitt during the best beard contest at the Daniel Boone Festival Thursday evening. 

Smith started growing his beard two Easters ago, he said, after challenging his son-in-law, the reigning beard champion, in 2008. Smith won last year’s contest. This year, no one challenged him. 

The contest was hosted by Mix 96.1 and The Bandit 101, along with the best dressed pioneer contest. 

Winners of the best dressed contest were: girls one and under, Chloe Alexis Smith; boys 2 and up, Leonard Dallas Brown; girls 2 and up, (three way tie), Claire Hedrick, Zoey Bargo and Ellie Collins; little miss, Amanda Gambrel; and adult woman, Chelsie Fredick. For the 13th straight year, Marvin Mills was named Mr. Daniel Boone as the best-dressed.

Additionally, winners of the Big Wheel Race were Kydan Guillen (3 year olds), Ethan Mills (4 year olds), Brendon Bingham (5-6 year olds), Brandon Abnes (7 year olds), J.T. Hall (8 year olds.)
