Second Old-Time Music festival this Saturday

The second Old-Time Music Festival for 2009 takes place this Saturday at the Whitley County Extension Building in Goldbug (Exit 15 off I-75).

The series, which aims to bring back the Tri-County’s connection to the music of its ancestors, will feature Donna and Lewis Lamb of Paint Lick. The Lambs were the 2007 recipients of the Kentucky Governors Folklife Award and are widely known for their contributions to Kentucky’s traditional music. The father-daughter team consists of Lewis on the fiddle and Donna on guitar. She is a top-notch singer and luthier with her instruments exhibited in Frankfort, Berea and elsewhere in the state. Long on the local music scene, they appeared for six weeks at the Knoxville World’s Fair.

Russ Childers of the Rabbit Hash String Band will give some banjo history and play fiddle as well, along with his wife Barb. Russ will MC the event.

Lexington fiddler Nikos Pappas, classicly trained and a graduate student at UK in musicology, but a lover and master of old-time fiddle, will play some old-time Kentucky fiddle tunes, some of which he collected. Singer and banjo picker Sarah Wood of Flatwoods will perform old-time and Irish tunes.

The Wild Boogers are made up of three old-time musicians with a common goal: to make the most authentic old music possible.

Formed in the early summer of 2009, The Wild Boogers are all from the Morehead area. It features John Rodgers: vocals, guitar, banjo, kazoo; Daniel Frederick: banjo, fiddle, vocals; Nathan ‘Bird’ Kiser: fiddle, banjo, vocals.

Whitley County’s own Virgil Bowlin will be featured on his expert mandolin, supporting some of the other groups as well.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. when there will be a break for supper. The musicians will return for the 7-9 p.m. square dance which will be called by Erin Stidham of Letcher County.

Workshops in fiddle and clawhammer banjo will be offered in the afternoon.

Pedigreed hot dogs will be available from Corbin’s own Hot Dog Wagon.
