Union College’s Regional Chorus will perform Mendelssohn’s “Hymn of Praise” at 3 p.m. Sunday. The annual spring concert is free and will be held at Conway Boatman Chapel on Union’s campus.
The “Hymn of Praise,” the last movement of Mendelssohn’s “Symphony No. 2,” is often called a symphonic cantata. It features sections for choir and soloists and has a religious text. Local singers from the Regional Chorus will perform the solos. It will be accompanied by pianist and Union staff accompanist Ann L. Toadvine.
The Union College Regional Chorus began rehearsing in January. Membership is principally drawn from musicians in Corbin, Barbourville, Williamsburg, Middlesboro and London, as well as from among Union students, staff, faculty and alumni. The chorus performs under the direction of Dr. V. Gay Gandy, assistant professor of music at Union College.
