Recanvass requested for magistrate race

CORBIN — By LeeAnn Cain / Staff Writer

A recanvass has been requested for one of the contested Laurel County races.

Following his defeat for Magistrate District 3, Rufus Fields has requested the county clerk’s office do a recanvass. A recanvass is similar to a recount and is a confirmation of the accuracy of the vote tally. However, a recount must be paid for by the party requesting it while a recanvass does not.

Fields came in second, with 30 percent of the vote (673 votes), and lost to incumbent Teddy Benge, who received 32 percent of the vote (701 votes). Requests for a recanvass or a recount can be done in close races, typically in cases where the difference between the totals is less than 100 votes.

According to County Clerk Dean Johnson, the recanvass will be done at 9 a.m. Thursday, and can be completed no earlier.
